What Goes Wrong Down There
Vapor from the slab reaches the underside of the plank, and the plank takes on moisture from below while the room dries it from above. On engineered that shows as cupping, then as the face layer separating from the ply beneath it. On solid wood laid below grade it shows faster and worse, and there is no fixing it once it starts.
How to Tell What You Have Downstairs
Look at a cut edge at a doorway or a vent. Engineered shows layers. Solid shows one continuous piece of wood. Then tape a two-foot square of clear plastic to the slab in an unfinished corner, seal all four edges, and leave it for two days. Moisture beading on the underside means the slab is passing vapor, which tells you what your floor is living with.
