Live oaks do not go dormant the way most people expect. They drop leaves in late winter, drop catkins by the bucketful in early spring, and drop acorns in autumn, so there is something on the ground most of the year.

Acorns Are the Serious One
A live oak acorn is small, hard, and nearly spherical, which makes it a point load waiting to happen. Step on one that has come in on a shoe and something around a hundred and fifty pounds goes through a contact patch a few millimeters across. On white oak that leaves a dent. On a softer floor it leaves a dent you can catch a fingernail in, and once wood fiber is crushed that far, it is crushed permanently. This is the most common source of unexplained small dents in this neighborhood and almost nobody connects the two.
Catkins and the Spring Mess
For about three weeks in March the streets are covered in stringy tan catkins and yellow-green pollen. Catkins carry a tannin load, and a damp catkin left on a floor overnight can leave a faint dark mark where it sat. The pollen is finer and gets into the microtexture of the finish, where it will not sweep out and will haze the floor until something lifts it. Both are seasonal, both clean up, and both are worth timing a visit around.
Leaf Tannin on a Wet Day
The mechanism is worth understanding because it explains a lot of mystery stains. Oak leaves contain tannic acid. Water carries it, and when it reaches a wood floor at a doorway it reacts with iron traces and with the tannin already in the oak, leaving a gray or blue-black mark. If it is on top of the finish it cleans off. If it has gone through a break in the finish and reached the wood, the reaction has happened inside the board itself and nothing applied to the surface can undo it.
The Line Between Fixable and Not
Embedded pollen, surface tannin marks, dirt held in place by years of product residue, and general film all come off, and a water-based protective coat goes over the top to take the next season's abrasion. Dents from acorns and furniture do not come out, dark tannin reactions inside the board do not come out, and worn-through lanes have nothing left to protect. Sanding and refinishing are a different trade and not something we take on.

When is the best time of year to schedule?
Late spring, once the catkin drop has finished and before summer traffic builds, is the sweet spot in this neighborhood. Autumn after the acorns have mostly come down is the second-best window. Any time works, and those two just make the result last longer.
Can you get small dents out of oak?
No. Compressed wood fiber does not spring back, and the steam-and-iron trick people find online is a good way to raise the grain and damage a finish. A maintenance coat makes a shallow dent less visible by evening the sheen, and the dent is still there.
There is a dark gray patch by the back door. Tannin?

Would a mat at every door really make a difference?
