The Return Grille
The big grille where the system draws air back is pulling every airborne particle in the house toward it, and the frame and the louvers accumulate a fur of it. Air movement past that fur sheds some of it back into the room. Take the grille off, wash it in the sink, and change the filter behind it on whatever schedule the manufacturer says instead of whenever somebody remembers.
The Supply Registers
Air comes out of these at speed, and if there is dust in the duct behind them it comes out too. Look inside one with a torch. If you can see a visible layer on the inside of the boot, that is the source of a good share of what lands on your floor, and it is worth getting the ducts looked at. On slab houses in this part of the county, ducts cast into or under the slab are also worth checking for moisture, which is a separate and more serious matter.

Is fine dust actually damaging the floor?
Fine settled dust is a mild abrasive once it is walked on, so it contributes. The larger grit coming in on shoes does far more. Dust is mainly an appearance and an air quality issue, which does not make it less annoying.
