Hardwood Floor Cleaning in Lake Worth, TX

Insect repellent is the one common household product that will visibly soften a floor finish, and every house near the water has a can of it.

Lake Worth households live outdoors from April through October. Casino Beach, the Marine Creek side, the streets that back onto the water. Everybody has sunscreen by the door and everybody has bug spray, because being near still water in Texas means mosquitoes are not optional.

Both of those products end up on the floor, and one of them is a genuine solvent.

What DEET Does to a Coating

DEET is an effective plasticizer and it attacks a wide range of polymers. It is the reason it fogs sunglasses, degrades watch straps, and takes the print off a fishing rod. On a floor finish, a spray drifting down onto the wood or a wet hand touching down leaves a spot where the coating has gone soft, then dull, then slightly sunken. It happens in minutes and it is not reversible by cleaning.

Sunscreen Is a Different, Slower Problem

Sunscreen is oil, emulsifier, and mineral or chemical filters. It does not attack the finish. It builds an oily film that is stubborn to remove and it holds a yellow cast, so the entry hall of a lake house at the end of a summer reads distinctly warmer in tone than the back bedroom. Avobenzone in particular yellows as it degrades, which is why the film gets more obvious over the winter and not less. That one is a cleaning job and it comes off well.

The Simple Rule

Spray outside. All of it, every time. Not in the entry, not in the garage doorway, not over the doormat. It sounds trivial and it is the single change that keeps a lake house floor out of trouble, because overspray is by far the most common way repellent reaches wood. The second rule follows from the first: keep the cans somewhere that makes it awkward to use them indoors. A basket on the porch works better than a shelf by the back door, because the shelf by the back door is where people stand and spray.

What We Take Off and What We Cannot

The oily summer film, the sand-and-grit haze, and the general dulling all come off in one pass with the solution recovered as it goes. A softened or etched spot where repellent sat is finish damage, and repairing it means sanding and recoating, which is a refinishing trade and not ours. We will tell you which marks are which and not pretend otherwise.

Not sure whether your floor needs cleaning or refinishing? There are three tests you can run yourself in about a minute, and they will tell you which one you are dealing with before anyone quotes you.

Hardwood questions from Lake Worth homeowners

It happened last summer. Is there anything at all?

Cleaning the room and putting a fresh maintenance coat over it reduces how much the spot stands out, because the surrounding floor comes up to meet it. It does not fill the divot. Expectations set honestly are better than a surprise.

Is aerosol worse than the pump bottle?

Considerably, because aerosol drifts. A pump lotion applied outdoors barely touches the floor at all. If people are going to spray indoors regardless, aerosols are the version to get rid of.

When should a lake house get done?

October, after the last of the swimming and before the holidays. One visit a year covers most houses here.
