Do not mop with untreated well water. A whole-house iron filter is the proper fix and it is worth having for the entire house, not only the floor. Failing that, use distilled or filtered water for floor cleaning specifically, which is a small quantity and a small cost. A softener alone does not remove iron reliably, which surprises people who assume it handles everything.
What Comes Off
Surface iron deposit lifts well, and the change in the color of a room can be considerable, because it is a film across the whole floor and not a stain. What does not come off is iron tannate that has formed inside the wood, which looks blue-black and sits below the finish.
