The Expansion Gap at the Wall
Wood needs room to grow at the perimeter, generally about the thickness of the flooring, hidden under the baseboard or shoe molding. A floor laid tight to the wall has nowhere to go in a humid August, so it pushes, and the result is either buckling in the field or a row of boards riding up at a wall. You can check your own in a minute: press down along the wall in several places and listen for movement, or pull off a short piece of shoe molding in a closet and look. If there is no gap, that is worth knowing before anybody adds moisture to the room.
Acclimation, and What Skipping It Leaves Behind
Flooring is supposed to sit in the house for several days before installation so it reaches the moisture content it will live at. Material delivered on Saturday and nailed down on Sunday goes in either wet or dry and then moves afterward. Wet stock shrinks and leaves permanent gaps between every board. Dry stock swells and crushes its own edges together, which shows up years later as a crowned look along the joints. Neither is repairable by cleaning and both change how carefully we work.
Fasteners and Adhesive Chosen by Whatever Was in Stock
Correct cleat or staple spacing is roughly every six to eight inches with fasteners near the ends of each board. Homeowner installs frequently run wider, which lets boards flex and squeak and lets moisture move more freely into the joints. On a glued installation the adhesive matters even more, since a general construction adhesive under wood over concrete will fail in a way a proper flooring adhesive will not. If your floor sounds hollow in places when you walk it, that is worth investigating before you spend on the surface.
Where an Installation Problem Meets a Cleaning Question
None of the above is fixed by cleaning, and we would not suggest otherwise. Gaps stay gaps, crowning stays, squeaks stay, and a hollow bond stays hollow. What we can do safely is work with very little moisture and recover it immediately, which matters far more on a floor with open joints or a questionable bond than on a well-installed one. We are not refinishers. No sander, no stain, no new polyurethane, so structural or installation faults need a flooring contractor.
