Hardwood Floor Cleaning in Arthurtown, SC

The most common thing people tell us they clean their wood floors with is the one thing guaranteed to take the shine off them.

Vinegar and water. Half a cup in a bucket, or a splash in a spray bottle, passed around for decades and now repeated by every website that has ever run out of things to say about housekeeping. It costs nothing and it smells like effort.

It is also a dilute acid being applied repeatedly to a coating that was never designed to meet one. A single mopping does no measurable harm. Twenty years of Saturdays is a different calculation, and in Arthurtown, where a lot of houses have been in the same family long enough for the habit to be inherited, that is exactly what we walk into.

What the Acid Actually Does

Polyurethane and the factory finishes on prefinished board are cross-linked coatings. Acetic acid does not dissolve them, it works on them slowly, softening the very top and leaving a microscopically rougher surface every time. Rough scatters light. That is the whole mechanism behind a floor that gets duller the more conscientiously it is cleaned, which is a genuinely maddening thing to live with.

The Water Is the Other Half

A vinegar mop is still a wet mop, and a wet mop puts free water on seams and leaves it there to evaporate. In a house with original narrow-strip oak over a crawlspace, that water goes into the joint, swells the edges of the boards, and over years produces the slightly raised board edges people describe as the floor feeling ridged underfoot.

What We Can Recover

Most of it, usually. The dullness from surface roughening does not come out with cleaning alone, but a water-based maintenance coat fills and levels that roughness optically, and the floor reads as sound again. What we cannot undo is edge swelling that has already happened, or anything where the finish is gone entirely and the acid has been working on bare wood.

What to Use Instead

A dry dust mop most of the time, because the majority of what dulls a floor is grit and grit comes up dry. When it needs more, a pH-neutral wood floor cleaner sprayed lightly onto a microfiber pad and never onto the floor. That is it. No vinegar, no ammonia, no dish soap, no oil soap, and nothing that promises shine, because shine in a bottle is a layer you will pay somebody to remove later.

Not sure whether your floor needs cleaning or refinishing? There are three tests you can run yourself in about a minute, and they will tell you which one you are dealing with before anyone quotes you.

Hardwood questions from Arthurtown homeowners

My mother cleaned floors with vinegar her whole life and hers looked fine.

Probably true, and there are two reasons. Older floors often had wax on them, which takes the acid instead of the finish, and houses were cleaned less often with far less water. The recipe has aged worse than the people using it.

Is one mopping going to hurt anything?

No. This is entirely a cumulative problem, which is why it is so easy to miss. Nobody has ever noticed damage on the day they did it.

How do I know whether my finish is still intact?

Drop a bead of water on the floor in a walking lane and give it two minutes. If it stays domed and wipes off dry, the finish is doing its job. If it goes flat and leaves a dark mark that fades slowly, you are close to bare wood and it is worth acting.
