Why the Patch Behaves Differently
The replacement boards are newer wood with a different finish, laid at a different time, often running the same direction but not the same length. They have a different moisture history, so they move at a different rate from the boards around them. The joint between old and new is frequently not tight, and there is sometimes a slight height difference you can feel with a bare foot.
What That Means for How We Work
A seam that is not tight is a route to the crawlspace. We treat that patch and its perimeter as the most sensitive part of the floor, with less solution and more recovery, and we do not let anything stand at that joint. On the surrounding original boards we can be more normal about it.
The Heat Damage Around the Old Opening
The boards that framed the grate spent decades a few inches from hot metal. They are commonly darker, drier, and more brittle than the rest, and any finish on them has usually gone. Cleaning takes off the black that is soot and grease. The color change in the wood itself is baked in and stays, which is a big part of why the patch will always be visible.

Away from the hall, these are ordinary mill village floors: pine or narrow oak, a heavy history of wax and oil soap, and a lot of grit tracked in from a valley where the shoulders are sand. That part responds well, and the color that comes back out of an old pine floor once the product layer is gone is the reason most people book a second time.

Can you make the patch match?
No. Matching means staining, and staining new wood to match hundred-year-old pine is skilled refinishing work that has to be done after sanding. What we can do is bring the surrounding floor to a consistent sheen so the patch reads as a repair and not as a stain.

If it is roughly two feet square and heavy cast iron, that is the original grate. If it is a normal duct register about ten by six, that is the modern system. The big one is worth keeping if you like it, and worth pulling and cleaning underneath either way.
