Standing up, a wood floor gives you almost no information. Light comes down onto it at a steep angle and bounces away from your eye, so everything reads as vaguely dull or vaguely fine.
Get your eye down near the boards and shine a light across the surface at a shallow angle, and the floor tells you everything at once. Painters call it raking light and it is how they find defects in a wall. It works exactly the same way on a floor.

How to Do It
Wait until dark or close the blinds. Lie down at one end of the room with your cheek almost on the floor. Hold a flashlight at floor level about a yard in front of your face and shine it away from you down the length of the boards. Then look along the beam. What you are seeing is every surface irregularity thrown into relief by the low angle.
Reading What Shows Up
A soft even haze over the whole floor is product film, and that is the best result on this list because it comes off. A hard-edged duller path running door to door is traffic wear in the finish, which means the coating is thinning there. Fine parallel lines are grit abrasion. Random deeper lines that catch the light individually are scratches, and if you can feel them with a fingernail they are in the wood. Cloudy patches with defined edges are moisture that got into the finish.
What Each One Means for the Quote
Film means cleaning does the job on its own. Traffic wear and grit abrasion mean cleaning plus a coat, and the sooner the better. Deep scratches and moisture damage in the wood mean part of what is bothering you is not going away, and any company that implies otherwise on the phone has not looked. Knowing which of these you have before you call means you can tell whether you are getting a straight answer.
