Hardwood Floor Cleaning in Pinecrest, SC

Wet feet from a pool do more to a wood floor than wet feet from anywhere else, and it is not the water doing it.

Aiken County has a lot of pools and a season that runs from April into October. In a house with a pool, one door gets used forty times a day for six months, and everybody coming through it is dripping.

The water itself is a nuisance and dries. What it leaves behind is the part that matters: chlorine or salt system residue, stabilizer, and whatever sunscreen and body oil washed off in the pool. That combination sits on a wood finish and works on it.

Chlorine, Salt, and What They Leave

As a drip evaporates, the water goes and the dissolved solids stay. On a wood finish that means a faint ring of mineral and chemical residue at every drip point, thousands of them over a summer, all in the same ten feet of floor. The film that builds up is slightly alkaline, it holds dirt, and it dulls a finish faster than plain traffic ever would. A salt system is not gentler, it just deposits sodium chloride instead.

Sunscreen Is the Other Half

Modern sunscreen is designed to be hard to remove from skin, so it is not going to give up easily on a floor. It is oily, it holds grit, and on a light finish the zinc and titanium in mineral formulas leave a haze that ordinary cleaning glides straight over. The place you notice it is the doorway where everyone stands to towel off.

The Realistic Plan for a Pool House

Get the whole main level cleaned and coated once a year, ideally in the autumn once the pool is shut, so the coat is fresh going into winter and takes the following summer. Keep a proper mat inside and outside the pool door, the kind with texture that holds water, not a decorative one. And accept that the pool door hallway is on a shorter cycle than the rest of the house.

Not sure whether your floor needs cleaning or refinishing? There are three tests you can run yourself in about a minute, and they will tell you which one you are dealing with before anyone quotes you.

The best time to book a pool house is the two weeks after you close the cover, when the traffic drops and the floor gets a chance to hold what we put on it.

Hardwood questions from Pinecrest homeowners

Is a wet footprint actually going to hurt the floor?

One will not. The same one repeated in the same spot several thousand times a season is a different matter, and that is what a pool door produces. It is a cumulative problem.

There is a white haze in front of the back door that will not mop off. What is it?

Most likely mineral deposit and sunscreen bound together in a film. Mopping spreads it and adds to it. It needs to be lifted chemically and recovered, which is what we do.

Will your coat protect against pool water?

It gives the residue something to build on that is not your finish, and it makes routine cleaning far more effective. It is not a barrier against standing water, and nothing sold as one really is.
