Oak and pine are both loaded with tannin. Put iron and water together with tannin and you get iron tannate, which is a blue-black compound that has been used as ink for about a thousand years. On a floor it forms wherever wet metal meets wood: around the heads of cut nails in a face-nailed board, under the feet of an old radiator, beneath a metal furniture glide, at the ring where a can was left standing.

If you want to confirm it at home, the stain will be centered on something metallic or on a place where something metallic used to be, and it will be darkest right at that point and fade outward.

Can bleach take the black out?
Household bleach will not, and it can raise the grain and lighten the surrounding wood, so you end up with a black mark inside a pale halo. The trade answer is oxalic acid, which does work on iron stains, but it is a refinishing-stage step that requires the finish to be off and usually requires sanding afterwards to blend it. That is a flooring contractor's job and not ours, and we would rather point you at one than experiment on your floor.
