The Soft Ones Need a Lighter Hand
On poplar and walnut, pressure is the risk. Enough force to lift stubborn residue off oak will burnish a soft surface, leaving a patch that reflects differently from the wood around it. Hickory and the Seasonal Swing
If your floor opens noticeably wide gaps every January and closes them by June, hickory is the likely explanation and there is nothing wrong. It is simply a wood that moves more than most for a given change in humidity. Holding indoor relative humidity above about thirty five percent through the winter narrows the swing. What we will not do is put more water into a floor that is already cycling, which is why the solution is metered on and taken straight back off.
