More wood floors get wrecked during a renovation than in the twenty years of ordinary living either side of it, and it happens in about a week.
The sequence is familiar. Somebody puts a drop cloth down, the drop cloth traps grit underneath it, a ladder gets moved a dozen times across the covered area, and by the time the cloth comes up the floor beneath has been sanded by its own protection. Add paint spatter, joint compound dust, and the odd drip of something that should never have touched wood.
It is worth being clear about what survives that and what does not, because the answers differ by material and because the timing of when you deal with it changes the outcome considerably.
Protect Properly or Do Not Bother
A drop cloth alone is worse than nothing, because it holds abrasive material against the finish and hides it while people walk on it. What works is rosin paper or builder's board taped at the seams, laid on a floor that has been vacuumed first, and lifted every few days so grit does not accumulate underneath. If a floor is going to take heavy traffic through a long job, hardboard over paper is the version that actually holds up.
Paint, Compound, and What Comes Off
Latex spatter that is a few days old generally comes off a sound finish without much trouble. Latex that has cured for months is far more stubborn and sometimes has to be left. Oil-based paint bonds to a wood finish and usually stays. Joint compound dust is the sneaky one: it is alkaline, mildly soluble, and mopping it just spreads it into a haze across the whole room, which is why so many floors look gray and flat for years after a remodel.
Timing Beats Technique
The single biggest variable is when. A floor cleaned within a few weeks of the work finishing comes back to something close to where it started. The same floor left for two years has had all that material ground into it by daily traffic and driven into the grain, and the result is noticeably less complete. If you have just finished a project, this is the moment, and it is far cheaper than what it turns into later.
Cane Creek, Forrest Park, and the Older Houses
The newer subdivisions out here have engineered plank with a factory finish, which survives a renovation better than most things and cleans up well afterwards. The older houses around town are a different case, with site-applied finishes of unknown age and sometimes soft pine underneath. On those, renovation damage goes deeper because there is less finish standing between the mess and the wood. We will look and tell you honestly what we think will come off.

We finished a kitchen remodel last month. Is it too soon to clean?
It is exactly the right time. Everything on the floor is still sitting on the surface and has not been ground in by six months of traffic. Waiting is the only thing that makes this job harder.

Wipe water across the scratch. If it disappears while wet, it lives in the finish and will improve a great deal. If it stays visible and dark, the wood itself is cut and no cleaning changes that. Worth establishing which it is before any conversation with the contractor about it.
