If your Smyrna floor sounds slightly hollow and has a little give when you walk across it, it is almost certainly floating, and that changes what is safe to do to it.
A great many of the floors that went into Smyrna between about 2000 and 2015 are floating engineered plank. The boards click together edge to edge and the whole assembly sits loose on a foam underlayment, held down by nothing but its own weight and the trim around the perimeter. It was fast to install, it worked over a range of subfloors, and it is a genuinely good product.
It is also a raft. The entire floor is one connected sheet, it moves as a unit, and there is a continuous air space underneath it. Every one of those facts matters when water gets involved, which is the one thing a floating floor handles worse than any other kind.
Why the Air Space Under It Matters

It runs along under the boards well past where it went in and it has no easy way out, since the perimeter is sealed by trim and the top is a moisture-resistant plank. That is why floating floors damaged by water are often damaged in a room away from where the water was spilled.
What That Means for How It Gets Cleaned
It means the volume of water on the floor is the entire safety question. A bucket and mop, a steam device, or anything that leaves the floor visibly wet is putting liquid onto a surface with hundreds of feet of seam in it and an open cavity beneath. On a floating floor that is not a refinement of the method, it is the reason the method exists.
Bounce, Hollow Spots, and the Perimeter Gap
Two things people worry about that are usually normal. A slight softness underfoot is inherent to a floating assembly and does not indicate a failure. A hollow sound in some spots comes from small variations in the subfloor and is cosmetic. What is worth checking is the perimeter gap, the quarter inch or so of expansion space that should exist all the way round under the trim. If a previous owner ran trim tight, or laid the floor into a doorway with no break, the raft has nowhere to expand and it will eventually peak in the middle of a room. That one is a flooring contractor's problem and worth catching early.
Stonecrest, Stewart Creek, and the Newer Side
The subdivisions built over the last fifteen years are where most of this stock is. The wear layers run thin, generally two to three millimeters, and the factory finish is the only finish those boards will ever carry. Sanding is not available as a future option. That makes a renewable protective coat over the top the whole maintenance plan, and it makes getting grit off the surface a wear question and not a cosmetic one.

How do I know whether mine is floating?
Walk it in socks and listen. A floating floor has a faint drum quality and a very slight give, and the sound changes as you cross the room. Then look at the transition into a tile or carpeted area: a floating floor stops at a T-shaped moulding with a visible gap under it, since it needs room to move. A nailed floor usually runs tight to a flat threshold.

Have someone look properly anyway. On a floating floor, water travels under the raft and shows up later and elsewhere, often as swollen board edges or a seam that has lifted a few feet away. If boards have already cupped or the veneer has separated from its core, that is permanent and those planks need replacing. Cleaning has nothing to offer there and we will say so.
Can you use a steam mop on these?
No, and nobody should. Steam forces moisture and heat into every seam simultaneously, which is the exact failure mode a floating engineered floor is most vulnerable to. Plenty of steam devices are marketed for wood floors and we would not put one on ours.
