Look at the boards around any floor register in your house. There is almost always a dark ring there, and it is not a coincidence.
Floor registers do two things to the wood immediately around them and both leave a mark. They blow conditioned air across a small patch of floor for several thousand hours a year, and they act as a collection point for every particle the return side of the system pulls through the house. The result is a ring, usually a couple of feet across, that is darker and duller than the room it sits in.

Why the Ring Forms
Dust that gets past a filter comes out of the supply registers and lands first on the nearest surface, which is the floor within a few feet of the vent. Any residue already on that floor gives it something to stick to, and the airflow keeps a slight static charge in play that helps it hold. Then the register cover gets vacuumed around and never properly under, so the perimeter never gets cleaned at the standard the rest of the room gets. Ten years of that produces a visible ring on a light floor and an obvious one on a dark floor.
The Drier Boards and the Wider Seams
There is a second effect that is worth knowing about. In January the air coming out of a supply register is warm and dry, and it is aimed at a small area of wood. Those boards lose moisture faster than boards in the middle of the room, so they shrink slightly more, and the seams around a heat register are frequently the widest seams on the floor. That is normal, it closes up again in summer, and it is not a defect. It does mean those seams collect more, which compounds the ring.
What We Do About It
We lift the covers. That sounds obvious and it is the step that gets skipped, because the ring cannot be cleaned properly through a grille. With the cover out, the perimeter and the top of the boot get cleaned along with the rest of the floor, and the ring goes with them. It is a small thing that accounts for a disproportionate share of the visible improvement in a house with a lot of registers in it.

Away from the vents these floors are generally in good condition. They are recent builds running engineered plank with a factory finish, they have not had time to accumulate decades of anything, and what is on them is usually a few years of spray mop residue that comes off readily.
