Cleaning takes the residue and the oxidation off. The nail holes stay, but they run along the wall line under the baseboard shadow and disappear visually once the field of the floor is clean.

Cleaning and protecting costs a fraction of refinishing and removes no wood. Refinishing sands away the finish and the top layer of the board and starts over, which is the right answer when the wood itself is exposed or stained through and the wrong answer when it is not. If your finish is intact under the haze, paying for a sanding would be spending several thousand dollars to solve a problem you do not have.
