Hardwood Floor Cleaning in Bayou Vista, TX

A cooler set down on a wood floor after a day on the water leaks meltwater for two hours and nobody moves it.

Bayou Vista is a canal community and nearly every house here has a boat lift out the back and somebody who fishes. The routine at the end of a day on the water runs directly through the house, and it involves several things a wood floor is poorly equipped to deal with.

The cooler is the one nobody thinks about, and of everything on the list it does the most damage.

The rest is manageable with a bit of order, and none of it requires giving up the fishing.

The Cooler

It comes in heavy, it goes down on the floor, and it sits there while everybody else deals with the boat. Underneath it is a slow leak of meltwater carrying fish slime, blood, and salt, and it is trapped under a large flat object where nothing evaporates. Two hours of that produces a defined dark ring, and repeated over a season it works into a seam and reaches the wood. Coolers belong on the porch, on a mat, or in the garage.

Salt, Slime, and Protein

Salt water on a finish leaves a hygroscopic deposit that stays faintly damp and hazy. Fish slime and blood are protein and will bond into a coating if left, going from wipeable to permanent inside a day. All of it is straightforward if it is dealt with the same evening and genuinely stubborn if it is left until the weekend. The difference is a bucket of fresh water and five minutes.

Setting the House Up

A hose and a bucket at the dock end so the cooler and the boxes get rinsed before anything comes up the stairs. One designated route in, with an absorbent mat at that door. Rod tubes and tackle boxes stored somewhere that is not the wood floor, because a tackle box has hard feet with grit caught under them and it gets dragged across a floor far more often than it gets carried. None of this is complicated and it takes deciding once instead of every Saturday.

Not sure whether your floor needs cleaning or refinishing? There are three tests you can run yourself in about a minute, and they will tell you which one you are dealing with before anyone quotes you.

Put a mat where the cooler lands and half of this problem disappears.

Hardwood questions from Bayou Vista homeowners

There is a dark ring where the cooler always goes.

If it is on the finish it comes off completely. If moisture and salt worked their way through to the wood, the mark now lives inside the board and nothing applied on top will reach it. The edge of the ring usually tells our technician which one it is.

Does the salt air affect the floor even without spills?

Yes, as a fine deposit that comes in on shoes and through open doors and leaves a haze that returns quickly after mopping, because a mop moves salt around instead of removing it.

When is the best time of year to book?

Late autumn, once the heavy fishing season is behind you. The floor gets a full season of residue taken off and a fresh protective coat before the next one starts.

The house is up a flight of outside stairs. Is that a problem?

Not at all. Most of the houses in this community are and the equipment comes up without difficulty. Mention it when you book so the crew plans for it.
