Because a floating floor over old vinyl has nowhere to send moisture. In a nailed floor over a wood subfloor, small amounts of water eventually find their way out. Here, anything that gets through a seam sits on top of an impermeable vinyl layer in a sealed cavity and stays. That is the mechanism behind a floating floor that swells at the seams, cups, and eventually smells, months after a spill everybody had forgotten.

Is a floating floor still worth cleaning?
Yes, assuming the top layer is real wood. Engineered plank cleans and coats normally. If the top layer is laminate, which is a photograph over fiberboard, that is a different product with different rules and the technician will say so instead of proceeding.
A seam has already swollen. Can it be brought back?
No. A swollen board edge is the fiber having taken on water and expanded, and it does not shrink back to where it was. Cleaning the rest of the room still improves the whole floor considerably, and the swollen boards stay swollen.
Should we pull it up and start again?
That depends on what is underneath and how much of it is failing, and it is a flooring contractor's call. We are not going to give you an opinion on a tear-out from a cleaning visit.
Is the hollow sound itself a problem?
Not in a floating floor, no. Floating floors are meant to sit loose and they sound like it. The sound only tells you something is under there. What would concern anybody is a hollow area that has appeared recently in a glued floor, because that means an adhesive has released.
