Treated sawdust tracked onto an oak floor and left over a humid weekend can leave a discoloration that is genuinely difficult to remove.
Thinner, Brake Cleaner, and Cutting Oil
The worst of the three. Brake cleaner, thinner, and cutting oil transferred from a boot sole onto a finished floor will soften a urethane on contact and leave a dull patch or a permanent print of the sole. Nothing removes that, because the damage is in the coating itself. This is worth a rule about shop boots at the door more than anything else on the list.
What the Cleaning Actually Handles
Embedded grit, surface rust specks, dust ground into the finish texture, and the layer of product residue holding it all in place come off. A water-based protective coat then takes the next round of abuse instead of your finish. Solvent damage, gouges, worn-through lanes, and anything that has gone into the wood stay exactly where they are, and we do not sand or refinish to chase them.
