Scent and Solvent Are the Ones to Watch
Attractants, cover scents, and lubricating oils are designed to stay put and they behave the same way on a floor coating. They leave a slick spot that holds dirt and resists ordinary cleaning, and some solvents used on firearms will soften a floor finish on contact. Keeping a bench, a mat, or a plastic tray under wherever equipment gets worked on is the whole answer. On a finished floor those spots are the sort of thing that has to be handled deliberately, not just mopped over.
What December Cannot Undo
The scuffing, the ground-in caliche, the oil spots, and surface blood all come off, and a maintenance coat put down afterward means the next season lands on a sacrificial layer instead of the finish. Deep gouges from a dropped hard case, a lane worn to bare wood, dark staining where blood or scent oil reached the board, and any cupping stay as they are. We clean. We do not sand a floor to bare wood or lay a new stain over it.
