Hardwood Floor Cleaning in Duncanville, TX

One board in the middle of the room is slightly higher at the edges than in the middle, and nobody can tell you what to do about it. Here is the honest answer.

It usually turns up in a kitchen or near an exterior door. A single board, or a small run of two or three, sits with its long edges raised a fraction above its center, so it catches the light differently and you can feel it with a bare foot. That is cupping, and it means the underside of that board took on more moisture than the top.

Duncanville's housing stock is largely sixties and seventies ranch, and a good deal of it has original or first-replacement wood on a slab or over a shallow crawl. Both of those give a board a moisture source underneath. A dishwasher that wept for a season, a slow supply line, a slab that stayed damp under a rug, and one board will register it while the twenty around it look fine.

The thing people want to know is whether cleaning fixes it. It does not, and it is worth understanding why.

What Cupping Actually Is

Wood expands across its width when it takes on moisture and shrinks when it dries. If the bottom of a board gets wetter than the top, the bottom expands more, and the board rolls its edges upward. The finish on the surface is usually still perfectly intact through all of this, which is why the board looks fine and feels wrong. Nothing applied to the top of the board changes the moisture content of the bottom of it.

The First Question Is Whether It Is Still Happening

This is the only part that is urgent. Put a hand flat on the board and on the boards either side, then check again in two weeks. If the cupping is getting worse, there is an active moisture source and it needs finding before anything else is worth doing. If it has been exactly the same for two years, the event is over and the board has settled into its new shape.

A Settled Cupped Board Is Often Fine to Leave

Once the moisture event has passed, a mildly cupped board with intact finish is a cosmetic issue, not a structural one. It will keep doing its job indefinitely. Sanding the room flat is an option and it is a real refinisher's job, not ours, and it costs what it costs. Plenty of people look at that number, look at one slightly raised board in a room they walk through, and decide to live with it. That is a reasonable decision.

Not sure whether your floor needs cleaning or refinishing? There are three tests you can run yourself in about a minute, and they will tell you which one you are dealing with before anyone quotes you.

The useful sequence is: find out whether it is still moving, deal with the source if it is, then decide what the surface deserves.

Hardwood questions from Duncanville homeowners

Will cleaning make the cupping worse?

No. The process meters solution onto the surface and recovers it in the same pass, so there is no standing water available to soak into a board edge. That is precisely the concern on a floor that has already had a moisture problem, and it is the reason we work this way as standard.

Can you clean the rest of the room and skip that board?

We clean the whole floor, including the cupped board. It takes the surface treatment the same as its neighbors and it will look better afterwards. It will still be cupped. Those are two separate facts and both stay true.

What if a lot of boards are cupped, not just one?

Then something larger is going on underneath, usually a slab moisture problem or a leak that has been running longer than anyone realized. In that situation we will tell you to sort out the source before spending money on the surface, because a cleaned floor over an active moisture problem is money that will not last.
