Hardwood Floor Cleaning in Ennis, TX

Two mats at the front door will do more for your floor over ten years than every product you will ever buy for it.

Ennis houses have front porches. The old ones downtown have deep ones, the newer places in Christian Meadows and Prairie View have smaller ones, and either way the porch is where the outside stops being outside.

That makes the entry the one spot in the house where a small amount of effort does the most good, for anybody who cares what their floor looks like in ten years.

The catch is that most doormats are decorative and do close to nothing.

What a Mat Is Supposed to Do

Two separate jobs, and no single mat does both. The first is scraping, which means dislodging hard particles from the tread of a shoe. That needs a stiff, coarse, open surface with somewhere for the grit to fall through, and it belongs outside. The second is absorbing, which means taking water and fine soil off the sole. That needs a dense pile with real depth to it, and it belongs inside.

Size Is the Part Everybody Gets Wrong

The rule of thumb in commercial buildings is that it takes six to eight footsteps to clean a shoe. A small decorative mat gets one step, maybe two, which removes almost nothing. That is why office buildings run walk-off matting several yards deep. In a house you are not going to do that, but going from a two-foot mat to a four-foot runner roughly doubles the effect for the cost of a mat.

The Backing Matters on Wood

Never rubber and never vinyl directly on a finished wood floor. The plasticizers in soft backings migrate into a floor coating over months of contact and leave a yellow or amber discoloration in the exact shape of the mat, and that discoloration is not a cleaning matter. Use a woven natural fiber mat with a separate felt pad, or a mat specifically sold as safe for wood floors.

Maintaining Them Is Half the Point

A mat that is full is not removing anything, it is a reservoir of grit sitting on your floor. Take the outside mat off the porch and beat it or hose it monthly. Vacuum the inside one every time you vacuum the room. A neglected mat is genuinely worse than no mat, because the grit in it gets pressed back into the shoe on the way out.

Not sure whether your floor needs cleaning or refinishing? There are three tests you can run yourself in about a minute, and they will tell you which one you are dealing with before anyone quotes you.

Hardwood questions from Ennis homeowners

Do the boot trays with a lip work?

For wet weather they are excellent, particularly by a back door. They hold the water and the mud in one place instead of letting it spread. They do not clean a shoe that is going to keep walking, so they complement mats and do not replace them.

Would a shoes-off rule solve it entirely?

It solves the grit problem almost completely and it is the single most effective thing anybody does. It swaps in a different, much milder problem, which is that socks and bare feet leave oils on a floor. That is a cleaning matter and not a wear matter.

The historic houses downtown have a screen door and a porch. Does that change things?

It gives you an obvious place for the scraper mat, which is a real advantage. A deep covered porch also keeps rain off the mat so it is dry and working when somebody arrives.

How often should the floor itself be done here?

Twelve to eighteen months for most Ennis households. The mat system is what decides which end of that range you land on.
