Half the marks on a wood floor are scratches and half are dents, they look almost identical from standing height, and only one of them has anything you can do about it.
This is the single most useful distinction in the whole subject and almost nobody makes it. A scratch is material removed from the surface: something hard was dragged across and took finish with it. A dent is material compressed downward: something heavy landed and crushed the wood fibers without breaking the surface.
They produce different marks and they have completely different prospects. Understanding which you are looking at tells you whether to spend money, and on what.

The Fingernail Test, and What It Actually Tells You
Run a fingernail across the mark at right angles. If it catches in a groove, there is a channel there and material has been removed. That is a scratch. If your nail glides across smoothly but the mark is still visible as a shallow depression, the surface is unbroken and the wood beneath has been pushed down. That is a dent. A third possibility is that your nail glides and there is no depression either, in which case it is a surface mark sitting on the finish and it will simply clean off.
Scratches: Depth Decides Everything
A scratch that has only broken the finish is a cosmetic issue, and cleaning plus a protective coat reduces how visible it is considerably, because the coat fills the channel slightly and stops it collecting dirt. A scratch that has gone through the finish into the wood shows as a pale line on a stained floor, because the color was only ever on top, and that does not come back without refinishing. Dents: Honest Answer, Nothing
Compressed wood fiber does not spring back. There is a folk remedy involving a damp cloth and an iron, which works occasionally on bare unfinished wood and which will damage a finished floor, so do not do it. Sanding reduces a shallow dent by taking the surrounding floor down to its level, which is expensive and spends board thickness. On most floors, and certainly on any engineered floor, a dent is simply a permanent feature of the house.
Why This Matters Before You Buy Anything
Products marketed as scratch repair are tinted fillers or oils, and on a dent they do nothing at all, because there is no channel to fill. On a fine scratch they work briefly. Knowing the difference stops you buying four bottles for a problem that two of them were never designed to address, which is the most common wasted spend in this entire category.
