Hardwood Floor Cleaning in Lucas, TX

The most worn piece of wood in a Lucas house is about an inch and a half wide: the front edge of every stair tread.

One-acre lots and large two-story custom houses mean staircases here are substantial, often open, often the first thing anybody sees, and almost always solid wood. They are also the single hardest-working surface in the building, and the wear is concentrated in a way no floor experiences.

Every person going up puts their weight on the front half of the tread. Every person coming down lands on the nosing, the rounded edge that projects over the riser. Multiply that by a household over fifteen years and the nosings are polished, then dulled, then worn through, while the back of each tread and the risers behind them are close to new.

Stairs Cannot Be Done With a Floor Machine

There is no way around this and it is why some companies quietly decline stairs or charge oddly for them. A tread is a small horizontal surface with a curved front edge, a vertical riser below it, and often a skirt board and balusters to work around. It is done by hand, tread by tread, and it takes a real share of the visit. If your house has a staircase and a landing, say so when you book so the time is allowed for and the quote is honest.

The Nosing Is Where the Truth Is

Run a hand over the front edge of the third or fourth tread from the bottom, the ones that take the most traffic. If it feels smooth and slightly slick, that is intact finish that has been polished by use. If it feels faintly rough or fibrous, the finish is gone there and you are touching bare wood. That is a genuine difference: bare wood on a nosing takes up dirt and moisture, and it darkens quickly once it starts.

The Slip Question, Which Matters on Stairs

Shine products build a slick polymer film, and a slick film on a stair nosing is the worst possible place for one. Anyone who has come down stairs in socks in a house that has been treated with mop-and-shine knows the feeling. Our maintenance coat is not built to add gloss for its own sake and does not turn a tread into a smooth plane. Taking off the accumulated shine layer usually makes a staircase noticeably less slippery, which is worth more than how it looks.

What We Cannot Do for a Worn Nosing

If the finish has gone through to bare wood along the front edge, we clean it, we protect it, and it stays visibly worn. No cleaning replaces missing finish. Refinishing a staircase is possible and it is skilled, expensive hand work because a machine cannot reach any of it. We do not do it and we will tell you plainly when a staircase has reached that point, because it is better to know than to pay for a result that will not arrive.

Not sure whether your floor needs cleaning or refinishing? There are three tests you can run yourself in about a minute, and they will tell you which one you are dealing with before anyone quotes you.

A staircase is the part of a house that gets photographed, walked on hardest, and maintained least.

Hardwood questions from Lucas homeowners

Can you do the stairs on their own?

Yes. Some households here have the stairs and the upstairs landing done more often than the ground floor, which makes sense given how much faster they wear. Tell us what you want covered and the price follows that.

How long before we can use the stairs?

About half an hour after we finish them, same as any other surface. We usually do stairs last for that reason, or do them first thing and work the ground floor while they set.

Do the balusters and the handrail get cleaned?

They get protected and kept dry. Cleaning painted balusters and a stained handrail is a different job with different products, and doing it badly damages both. We keep our work on the treads, the nosings, and the risers.
