Hardwood Floor Cleaning in Parker, TX

A treadmill weighs about as much as three people standing in the same spot, and it vibrates. Very few wood floors were specified with that in mind.

The home gym went from unusual to standard in about five years, and in houses with the space for it, which describes most of Parker, it usually ends up in a spare bedroom, a bonus room, or a corner of the garage-adjacent flex space. Those rooms have wood floors.

Gym equipment does three separate things to a floor and only one of them is obvious. There is the static load of something very heavy on small feet. There is vibration, which works grit into the finish continuously while the machine runs. And there is the impact of a dropped weight, which is the one everybody worries about and the one that happens least often.

The Feet Are the Real Problem

A treadmill concentrates two hundred and fifty pounds or more onto four or six small rubber or plastic feet. Under that pressure, any grit trapped beneath a foot is pressed hard into the finish, and the vibration of the motor then works it back and forth for an hour at a time. The result is four small ground-in patches that look like burns. They are not burns. They are concentrated abrasion, and they are the most common gym damage we see.

Vibration Moves the Machine

Anything with a motor walks slightly over time. A treadmill that started square to the wall will be an inch out after six months, and that inch was covered with the full weight of the machine bearing on those feet. It is a slow drag across the finish. If you can see faint parallel tracks leading away from where a machine sits, that is what they are.

The Mat Is Not Optional and Most Are Wrong

A proper equipment mat spreads the load and takes the vibration, and it is the single thing that prevents all of the above. The mistake is using a thin rubber-backed mat, which traps moisture and can discolor a finish over months, or a mat smaller than the machine's footprint, which does nothing for the feet hanging off the edge. Get one sized larger than the equipment and lift it occasionally to let the floor breathe.

Dropped Weights, Honestly

A dumbbell dropped on a wood floor dents it, and a dent is compressed wood fiber. There is no cleaning, coating, or product that raises it back up. Sanding sometimes reduces the visibility of a shallow one and does not remove a deep one. If you lift free weights over a wood floor, the answer is a dedicated rubber platform, because the floor cannot be made to survive it and repairing it is not a service that exists at a sensible price.

Not sure whether your floor needs cleaning or refinishing? There are three tests you can run yourself in about a minute, and they will tell you which one you are dealing with before anyone quotes you.

Hardwood questions from Parker homeowners

Can you get the marks under the machine feet out?

Usually a good deal of it, because much of what you are seeing is ground-in grit and residue in an area of fine abrasion. What stays is any finish that has actually been worn away, and on a long-standing machine that can be some of it. Moving the equipment before we arrive lets us treat the area properly.

Should I just put the gym on the concrete in the garage?

If the option exists, it is the low-stress answer, though a garage slab in a Texas summer is its own problem. Where the equipment stays indoors, a properly sized mat solves most of it.

Does the vibration harm the floor structurally?

On a slab, no. On a second-story room over an open-web truss floor, a heavy machine can make itself known through the ceiling below, and that is a structural comfort question and not a flooring one. The finish is what takes the damage either way.

Which areas does the Parker crew cover?
