Three Products Sold Under One Name
Horizontal and vertical bamboo are made by slicing stalks into strips and laminating them flat or on edge. Both are softer than red oak and dent easily. Strand-woven bamboo is made by shredding the fiber, saturating it with resin, and compressing it under enormous pressure, and it is genuinely harder than almost any domestic hardwood. Look at the surface: a visible pattern of long flat strips with knuckle nodes is horizontal, narrow lines on edge is vertical, and a dense marbled or grain-free look is strand-woven.
Moisture Is the Real Weakness
All bamboo products are made from laminated strips held together with adhesive, and moisture attacks the glue lines before it attacks the material. What that looks like on a floor is a seam that has opened, an edge that has begun to separate into visible layers, or a board that has swollen and stayed swollen. It is why standing water is even less acceptable on bamboo than on oak, and why metered application with immediate recovery is the only sensible way to clean one.
Finish and Fading
Most bamboo was sold factory-finished with an aluminum-oxide coating that behaves like any other, so cleaning and a water-based maintenance coat are appropriate and effective. Carbonised bamboo, the darker caramel-colored product, was heat-treated to get that color, which also softened it, and it fades noticeably under ultraviolet light. Rug lines on a carbonised floor are common and permanent.
The Refinishing Question
Solid bamboo can sometimes be sanded and strand-woven is difficult even for specialists, since the resin content is hard on equipment. Engineered bamboo with a thin veneer cannot be sanded at all. None of that is our department, since sanding, refinishing, and re-staining are outside what this company does, and it is why a renewable protective coat is worth more on a bamboo floor than on most oak: it may be the only maintenance option the floor will ever have.

Look at what is different about that room: an exterior door, a window that condenses, a plumbing wall. Open seams on bamboo are nearly always a moisture story, and finding the source matters more than the appearance.
Can bamboo take the same coat as oak?

Is it worth maintaining a twenty-year-old bamboo floor?
