Why the Gaps Are There
Two things. A hundred years of seasonal cycling in a house that had no climate control for most of its life, which has left the boards permanently narrower than they were when installed. And the original installation, which in many of these houses was face-nailed square-edge boards laid tight and never designed for the humidity swings central air produces.
What Happens When You Fill Them
The wood keeps moving. A rigid filler cannot, so in the first dry season the boards shrink away from the filler and it falls out, or the boards swell and crush the filler and push it up proud. Rope, sawdust and glue, and hard putty have all been tried in these houses and all of them fail on the same timetable. Worse, a filler that stays put transfers the movement to the next gap along, which then opens further.
What We Do About Them
Get what is in them out, which is usually a century of grit, and leave them alone. A clean gap on an old floor reads as a shadow line and looks entirely appropriate to the house. A gap packed with gray debris reads as neglect. That distinction is most of the visual difference between an old floor that looks cared for and one that does not.
The Moisture Point, Which Is Not Optional Here
An open gap over a crawl space is a hole. Any liquid that goes into it lands on the underside of the flooring or on the joist below, where it will not dry. That is why mopping these floors is genuinely bad practice and why our solution is metered and recovered in the same pass. It is also why we will not sand, refinish, or apply polyurethane to one of these floors, because that is a specialist's work on a hundred-year-old surface.

The floor is pine, not oak. Does that change the approach?
It makes it gentler. Longleaf pine from that era is dense and beautiful and it is still softer than oak, and it takes marks easily. It also often carries an old shellac or varnish finish, which the technician will test for before starting.
Should we insulate under the floor?
Usually yes, along with a ground vapor barrier in the crawl space. Both reduce seasonal movement and both are more effective than anything done on the surface. It is not our trade and it is the right answer.
Can you improve a floor that is this dark?
