Hardwood Floor Cleaning in Weston Lakes, TX

Brazilian cherry does not fade in sunlight. It darkens, dramatically, and that catches out more homeowners than any other species.

A great many of the custom homes built through Weston Lakes in the late nineties and two thousands went in with imported hardwood: Brazilian cherry above all, and also tigerwood, cumaru, and Santos mahogany. Bradford on the Bend, Waterford, Riverwood Forest, and The Reserve all have plenty of it.

These species behave differently from domestic oak in ways that matter to anybody maintaining one, and the biggest difference is what light does to them.

Photo-Darkening Is Not Damage

Jatoba, sold here as Brazilian cherry, arrives a light salmon or tan color and deepens to a rich red-brown over roughly six months of light exposure. That change is a reaction in the wood itself and it is permanent and desirable. It also means anything covering the floor during that period leaves a pale patch behind. Owners who put a rug down on a new Brazilian cherry floor and lifted it a year later have all had the same unpleasant surprise.

Living With the Pale Patch

Leave it uncovered and it will catch up with the rest of the floor, faster in a room with strong daylight and slower in a north-facing one. Months, not weeks. Nothing accelerates it and nothing we apply changes it, because the color is inside the wood and not in the coating. Moving rugs a few inches twice a year keeps any boundary from becoming a hard line.

Density Cuts Both Ways

These woods are far harder than oak, which is why they were specified. Hardness resists denting and does nothing about the finish on top, so a Brazilian cherry floor scratches at the same rate as anything else, and the scratch shows more because the wood underneath is a different color from the coating. The other consequence is that the natural oils in some of these species affect what will bond to them, which is a question worth settling before any coating is applied.

Not sure whether your floor needs cleaning or refinishing? There are three tests you can run yourself in about a minute, and they will tell you which one you are dealing with before anyone quotes you.

Clean or refinish? Run the three tests →

Imported hardwood rewards somebody who tests before assuming, and that is the difference between a good visit and an expensive mistake.

Hardwood questions from Weston Lakes homeowners

Ours has gone very dark. Can it be lightened?

No. The color change is in the wood, deep enough that even sanding does not reliably reverse it, and sanding is not something we do. A clean floor does read clearer and slightly brighter, which is the closest anybody gets.

Is a maintenance coat safe on an oily tropical species?

It is a real question and the answer depends on the species and the existing finish. Our technician tests adhesion in an inconspicuous spot before committing. Anybody who skips that test on a floor like this is guessing with a very expensive material, and the guess is not theirs to lose.

Scratches show badly on ours. Anything to do?

Cleaning plus a coat evens the sheen and makes fine scratching much less visible, which on a dark floor is a bigger improvement than people expect. Anything a fingernail catches in has reached the wood and stays.

How often should a floor like this be done?

Twelve to eighteen months. There is no special interval for exotic species, and the value of a renewable coat is higher because the floor itself was expensive.
