Lift a floor register and look at the board in section. A stack of plies with a thin face on top is engineered, and the depth of that face is the number that matters. The First Ten Years Decide the Rest
A new floor does not need much. What it needs is to be kept free of grit and to have nothing deposited on it, and the second half of that is where people go wrong. Spray mops with refill cartridges are the standard new-homeowner purchase and most of them leave a polymer behind by design. Five years in it reads as haze. Ten years in it is a visible film that no household product removes, because the products meant to strip it are in the same family as the ones that laid it down.
