Hardwood Floor Cleaning in Alief, TX

A shoe-free house has far less grit on the floor and considerably more film, and the film is the harder of the two to remove.

A large share of the households across Keegans Glen, Villa Verde, Southwest Crossing, Concord Colony, and Boone Manor take their shoes off at the door, which is the single best thing anybody can do for a wood floor. Grit is what actually destroys a finish, and leaving it at the threshold removes most of it.

So the floors we see in Alief tend to have very little abrasion damage for their age. What they have instead is a coating problem, and it comes from the kitchen.

High-heat cooking is the mechanism, and it does not stay in the kitchen.

How Cooking Ends Up on the Floor

Anything cooked hot in oil sends a fine aerosol into the room. A range hood catches part of it and the rest circulates, cools, and settles on every horizontal surface, floors included. It is not greasy in a way you can see. It builds as an even, faintly tacky layer that holds whatever dust lands on it, and in an open-plan house it travels a long way from the stove. Households that cook this way daily can lay down in two years what another house takes eight to accumulate.

Why a Damp Mop Makes It Worse

Water and a mild cleaner do not dissolve cooked oil residue. They spread it and thin it, which produces a floor that looks better for an hour and then dries back with the film redistributed slightly more evenly. Over years this is how a floor gets a uniform dull cast with no obvious cause. Removing it takes a solution formulated to break the residue and a machine to lift it off, which is the entire basis of what we do.

The Sock Detail

In a shoe-free house the floor is walked in socks or bare feet, and skin oil transfers to the surface constantly. On its own that is nothing. Combined with the cooking film it produces a floor that shows every footprint within a day of being cleaned, which is the complaint that most often brings people to call somebody. Once the underlying layer is off, the prints stop appearing, because there is nothing tacky left for them to register in.

Not sure whether your floor needs cleaning or refinishing? There are three tests you can run yourself in about a minute, and they will tell you which one you are dealing with before anyone quotes you.

Hardwood questions from Alief homeowners

The floor near the kitchen is sticky in summer and not in winter. Why?

Humidity. Residue that is firm at forty percent relative humidity softens at seventy, and Houston spends most of the year at the high end. The stickiness is a symptom of the layer being there year round.

Does a better range hood solve it?

It helps considerably, especially one that vents outside instead of recirculating through a charcoal filter. It will not eliminate the issue, because a wok or a hot pan puts out more than any hood captures.

Our floor is laminate in some rooms and wood in others.

We will clean the wood and tell you plainly which rooms are which if you are not sure. Laminate has a printed surface under a wear layer and takes no maintenance coat, so we do not put one on it.

How often for a household that cooks every day?

Annually for the kitchen and the connected living space. The bedrooms and anywhere behind a door can usually go the full eighteen months, and there is no reason to pay to do rooms that do not need it.
