Hardwood Floor Cleaning in Alvord, TX
Sawdust looks harmless because it is wood, and on a wood floor it is one of the more troublesome things you can track in.
Alvord is a town where a good number of houses have a real shop attached. Something with a table saw in it, out through Grassland Estates and The Ranches at Rolling Hills, or a converted single-car garage on one of the older places near the original townsite.
Anybody who works wood generates dust, and the assumption is that wood dust on a wood floor cannot possibly be a problem. It is a reasonable assumption and it is wrong for three separate reasons.
It Is Finer Than It Looks
The visible shavings are not the issue. The issue is the fraction from a sander or a router that is small enough to stay airborne for hours, which means it leaves the shop on clothes and in hair and settles all over the house long after anybody stopped working. It is fine enough to sit down inside the microtexture of a floor coating, where sweeping will not reach it and a damp mop turns it into a paste.
Some of It Is Not Just Wood
Sanding a finished piece produces dust that is part polyurethane or lacquer. Sanding pressure-treated lumber produces dust with preservative in it. Working MDF produces dust with resin and formaldehyde binders. None of that behaves like sawdust from raw oak and some of it is genuinely sticky when it meets any humidity.
Oily Species Are the Worst Offender
Walnut, cedar, teak, and mesquite all carry natural oils, and the dust from them transfers those oils onto whatever it lands on. A cedar project in the shop puts a faintly greasy film across the house that people can smell for a week and cannot account for. On a floor it holds dust and it goes tacky, and no amount of ordinary mopping shifts it.
Not sure whether your floor needs cleaning or refinishing? There are three tests you can run yourself in about a minute, and they will tell you which one you are dealing with before anyone quotes you.

Hardwood questions from Alvord homeowners
Would a dust collector fix it?
It does most of the heavy lifting and it does not catch what is already on you. The households that solve this properly put a mat and a change of shoes at the shop door and run an air filter in the shop for twenty minutes after the tools go off.
The floor near the shop door feels slightly sticky. Is that the oils?
Very likely, especially if anybody has been working cedar or mesquite. It is a film sitting on the coating and it comes off completely with a solution that has enough dwell time on it.
Can we clean it ourselves with mineral spirits?
Please do not. Mineral spirits softens some floor finishes and does nothing at all to others, and the version where it works is also the version where it damages the coating. It is worth having somebody test a small area first.
How long is the house tied up?
Half a day for most Alvord houses. Each room is walkable roughly half an hour after the crew moves off it, and the maintenance coat wants a day before rugs go back down.
