Hardwood Floor Cleaning in Hurst, TX

If you get a shock off the door handle every January, your floor is telling you something about the air in your house.

Static in winter is a running joke in most Hurst households. Hurst Hills, Bellhaven, Woodcrest, Chriswood, all built when central heat was standard and none of them built with any humidity control at all.

It is not really about the carpet or your socks. It is about how dry the indoor air gets when a gas furnace runs for weeks, and the same dryness is acting on every piece of wood in the building.

What the Shocks Are Actually Measuring

Static builds when relative humidity drops below roughly thirty percent. Above forty it mostly stops. So a house where somebody is getting zapped daily is a house running in the twenties, and wood is a hygroscopic material that gives up moisture to air in that condition. Every board in your floor is slightly narrower in January than it was in July. On a twenty-foot run of two and a quarter inch oak, that adds up to something you can put a fingernail into, and none of it is a defect.

The Gaps Are Not Damage

That shrinkage opens thin lines between boards, and people ring us in February convinced the floor is failing. It is doing exactly what wood does. Come summer the boards take moisture back on and the lines close. The version that is a problem is a gap that does not close, which points at something more than seasonal cycling: a board that dried out permanently, a subfloor issue, or a floor that was installed at the wrong moisture content to begin with. The test is patience. Mark one gap with a pencil dot on the baseboard beside it and look again in August.

Why Winter Is a Good Time to Clean and a Bad Time to Judge

Good, because the seams are open and the accumulated grit in them can actually be removed, and because a maintenance coat cures cleanly in dry air. Bad, because a floor at its widest gaps looks worse than it is, and decisions about replacing a floor should not be made in January. If somebody quoted you for a new floor in the middle of a cold snap, look again in July before you sign. We have had Hurst customers cancel a five-figure replacement on the strength of a summer second opinion, which is not a sales pitch on our part since we do not sell floors, do not sand, and do not refinish.

Not sure whether your floor needs cleaning or refinishing? There are three tests you can run yourself in about a minute, and they will tell you which one you are dealing with before anyone quotes you.

Hardwood questions from Hurst homeowners

Should we run a humidifier for the sake of the floor?

Holding the house somewhere between thirty five and fifty percent through the winter is kind to wood, to furniture, and to people. Just do it with something measured. A hygrometer costs very little and guessing at humidity is how floors get too much of it.

Does your process add moisture to a dry floor?

Not meaningfully. The solution is metered and recovered in the same pass, so nothing is left to soak in. It is a surface operation, not a wetting one.

The gaps have grit down in them. Can you get that out?

A good deal of it, yes, and winter is when there is room to. Be aware that a clean gap sometimes reads darker than a full one for a week or so.
