The version that is a problem is a gap that does not close, which points at something more than seasonal cycling: a board that dried out permanently, a subfloor issue, or a floor that was installed at the wrong moisture content to begin with. The test is patience. Mark one gap with a pencil dot on the baseboard beside it and look again in August.
Why Winter Is a Good Time to Clean and a Bad Time to Judge
Good, because the seams are open and the accumulated grit in them can actually be removed, and because a maintenance coat cures cleanly in dry air. Bad, because a floor at its widest gaps looks worse than it is, and decisions about replacing a floor should not be made in January. If somebody quoted you for a new floor in the middle of a cold snap, look again in July before you sign.
