Limestone patios and decomposed granite paths shed a fine pale dust constantly, and in a hillside house the wind pushes it toward the door. That dust is calcium carbonate and quartz. The quartz portion is harder than any floor finish, and it collects in a line just inside the threshold where the door sweep drops it. Households who are careful about the front door frequently have no rule at all about the patio door, which is the one doing the damage.
Loose Strips and What They Do Underneath
Kneel at a wood-to-tile junction and press the metal or wood strip with your thumb. If it moves at all, it has been moving under every footstep for years and it has worn a groove in the finish under its own edge. That groove holds soil, and no mop reaches into it.
