Hardwax oil sits in the wood instead of on it. It is maintained with a matching refresher applied thinly and buffed in, and it can be spot-repaired in one area without touching the rest of the room, which is its real advantage in a house with a large open plan. What it cannot take is a general purpose floor cleaner, anything with a polymer in it, or a product that leaves a shine. Those sit on top, they look wrong immediately, and getting them back off an oiled floor is difficult work.
Wide Plank on Urethane Has Its Own List
Boards seven or eight inches wide move several times as much across their width as a two and a quarter inch strip does, so seasonal seams open wider in a dry Hill Country February. A seam in a urethane floor is a route for anything wet, which is exactly why we put down a measured amount and take it straight back up, with nothing left in a joint long enough to travel. Wide plank also shows a scrub pattern more readily, since there are fewer joints to break up the light across a given area.
The One That Cannot Be Undone
Putting an acrylic shine product on a hardwax oil floor is the mistake we see most in new builds, usually applied by a well-meaning cleaning service in the first year. Removing it is a specialist job and the floor rarely looks the way it did. Alongside that sit the standard permanent items: deep gouges, worn-through finish, black staining from pet accidents, cupping, and delaminated engineered veneer. Nobody here sands, screens, or lays down a new stain coat, since all of that belongs to a refinishing crew.
