Where the Movement Goes

In a well-installed floor the difference is absorbed in an expansion gap around the whole perimeter, hidden behind the baseboard and the quarter round. In a floor laid tight to the walls, or one where a later remodel put cabinets or a hearth down on top of the flooring, there is nowhere for it to go.
What It Looks Like When There Is Nowhere
Boards pressing hard against each other in late summer with every gap closed. Board edges crushing so a faint ridge appears along a seam. In the worst version, a section that lifts clear of the subfloor, usually in the middle of the widest run, which is the floor doing the only thing left available to it. None of that is a cleaning problem and none of it responds to anything applied on top.
How to Check Your Own
Take a thin blade or a stiff card and slide it into the gap between the baseboard and the floor in a few places along an outside wall. If it goes in freely, there is expansion space and the floor can breathe. If it stops dead everywhere you try, the floor is pinned and it has been fighting itself every August since it went down. Also look at where the flooring meets a fireplace hearth, an island, or a door jamb, since those are the spots where a later trade most often eliminated the gap without knowing what it was for.

Can the expansion gap be added after the fact?
Yes, by a flooring contractor, by pulling the base trim and trimming the floor back at the perimeter. It is a genuine repair and far cheaper than what happens if a floor keeps fighting itself. It is not something a cleaning company does.
Does keeping the house at a steady humidity solve it?
It reduces how much movement there is, which for a marginal floor is often enough. Running the air conditioning normally through summer and not letting the house sit closed up and unconditioned is most of what that means in practice.
