If the protected patch is the same orange honey tone that you dislike, the floor is clean and you simply do not like the color. No cleaning service changes that.
What Would Actually Change the Color
Sanding and re-staining, which is a refinisher's job, several days, an empty house, and a real cost. Or replacement. Those are the only two options, and anybody offering to change the tone of your floor with a cleaning service or a coating is describing a tinted product that will wear unevenly and look worse in eighteen months than the original does now. Two, if you are keeping it for a while. A clean nineties oak floor looks considerably better than a dirty one and the gloss buildup that exaggerates the dated look comes off with it, which softens the effect more than people expect. And if you are selling, buyers discount a dated floor and discount a dated dirty floor a great deal more. The first is a style preference. The second reads as neglect.

There the conversation is the ordinary one: a hard factory finish in good condition under an accumulation of product, which comes off and returns the floor to close to how it looked on handover.

Can you make the floor less shiny?
Partly, and it depends on the cause. A high-gloss factory finish stays high gloss. A gloss appearance created by years of shine product comes off with the product, and a lot of eighties and nineties floors look dramatically less plasticky afterwards. The protective coat we apply is not a gloss product.
Is it worth cleaning before getting refinishing quotes?
Yes, and for a practical reason. A refinisher quoting on a dirty floor is quoting on an unknown, and the recommendation tends to be heavier. A clean floor lets everybody see the actual condition of the wood, which usually works in your favor.
