Either way they take finish differently from the surrounding oak and they take wear differently. Aggressive scrubbing rounds them off and lightens them, and there is no putting that back.
Why This Floor Was Discontinued
Pegged colonial plank was a fashion, and fashions in flooring run about twenty years. Manufacturers stopped making it in this form, which matters for one practical reason: if a board gets damaged there is no shelf to buy a replacement from. The solution has enough dwell to release what is sitting in the bevel and it gets recovered along with it, which is the difference between cleaning a grooved floor and redistributing it. Is a plank this wide more prone to gapping?
Yes. Movement scales with board width, so a five inch plank opens roughly twice as far seasonally as a two and a quarter inch strip. On a beveled floor that is much less noticeable, because the eye reads the bevel and not the gap. That is part of why the detail exists.
