Hardwood Floor Cleaning in White Knoll, SC

If there are cleats by your back door, there are little black rubber pellets on your wood floor, and they get everywhere except back to the field.

Artificial turf fields are filled with crumb rubber, thousands of tiny black granules that hold the fibers upright. They get into socks, into shoe treads, into the seams of a bag, and into the folds of a uniform, and every one of them comes home.

In a household with two or three kids playing on turf through the fall, that is a steady daily delivery of hard granular material onto the floors, concentrated in exactly one route: back door, hall, laundry, bedroom.

Rubber Is Softer Than the Finish, So Why Does It Matter

The pellet itself is not the abrasive. It is the sand mixed in with it, the field dirt clinging to it, and the fact that a hard granule under a shoe concentrates all of a person's weight onto a point smaller than a pinhead. That is what marks a finish. There is also a second problem: crumb rubber is a rubber product and it carries the same plasticizers that leave a permanent print when rubber sits against a floor finish for a long time in one spot.

Where the Damage Concentrates

Under the bench or chair where the bag gets dumped, and in the first two yards inside the door. That patch of floor is taking the pellets and the grit and the moisture from wet gear all at once. In most White Knoll houses we can find the gear drop zone without being told.

A Realistic System

A hard-surface mat outside for stamping, a bin by the door that the bag goes into, and a rule that cleats never cross the threshold. Then vacuum that entry strip twice a week during the season with a hard-floor head and no beater bar. And book the floor for the end of the season, so you are cleaning up after the damage window closes and not before it opens.

Not sure whether your floor needs cleaning or refinishing? There are three tests you can run yourself in about a minute, and they will tell you which one you are dealing with before anyone quotes you.

Hardwood questions from White Knoll homeowners

Do cleats themselves scratch a wood floor?

Badly, and faster than anything else in an ordinary household. Molded plastic studs concentrate weight the way a stiletto heel does, and on a factory finish it takes very few steps to leave marks that no cleaning will remove.

There are small dark specks stuck to the floor that will not vacuum up. Is that the rubber?

Very likely, particularly near a heat vent or in afternoon sun, where the pellets soften slightly and stick. They lift chemically without much trouble and they should not be scraped.

Is once a year enough for a house like ours?

For the main level, generally yes. For the entry strip and the laundry route, twice is closer to right while there are kids in the sports years.
