Stone Sheds
Sandstone and flagstone are sedimentary and they release grains at the surface, particularly along the cleft face that gives them their texture. Travertine has open pores that hold and then release grit. Unsealed or worn-sealed stone does this constantly, and the grains are quartz, which is harder than any floor finish ever made. Every one of them that reaches the wood is a cutting tool under a shoe. You can test your own with a dark cloth. Wipe a square foot of the stone with some pressure and look at what comes away. On a shedding floor it is visibly sandy, not just dusty.
The Grout Line Is the Other Half
Cement grout also erodes, and eroding grout produces a fine alkaline sand. That is what the dusty film across a stone entry is if nobody has cleaned it in a while. It travels straight onto the wood at the transition, and it is the reason the first six feet of hardwood past a stone foyer is nearly always the most scratched floor in a house of this size. Wide grout joints in a flagstone pattern make it worse, because there is simply more grout, and cleft flagstone means the joints are deeper and hold more of what falls into them.
What Fixes It and What We Do
Have the stone sealed on the schedule the installer recommended, which almost nobody does, and put the mat on the stone and not on the wood. A mat on the stone catches the grains at the point they are released. A mat on the wood catches them after they have already been walked across three feet of oak, which is the part you were trying to protect. Then, for the wood, our pass takes off the accumulated haze and puts a maintenance coat on so the next round of grit wears against a sacrificial layer. What we cannot do is remove scratches that have gone into the wood, since sanding and refinishing sit outside this service entirely and always will.
