Hardwood Floor Cleaning in Annetta, TX

If your floor is walnut, hickory, or pine, it is not oak and it does not behave like oak, and the difference is measurable.

The custom builds through Deer Creek, Bear Creek Ranch, and La Madera did not all get oak. Walnut went into a lot of them, hickory into others, and the occasional wide pine floor in a house that wanted a particular look.

Species is not a cosmetic choice. It determines how easily the floor dents, how it takes a finish, and what an owner should reasonably expect from it over twenty years. Two identical houses on the same street can have completely different floor problems for no other reason.

The Hardness Numbers, in Practical Terms

There is a standard test that measures how much force it takes to push a steel ball into a board, and the numbers spread further than most people expect. Hickory sits well above red oak. Walnut sits meaningfully below it, at roughly two thirds the hardness. Eastern white pine is a fraction of oak. So a dropped pan that leaves a barely visible mark on a hickory floor leaves a clear dent in walnut and a divot in pine, and none of that is a defect in the floor.

Why Walnut Owners Call Us More Often

Two reasons that have nothing to do with the wood being poor. Dark walnut shows dust and shows scratches as pale lines, so the floor looks in worse condition than it is. And because it dents readily, people assume the floor is failing and start looking for a product to fix it, which usually means a shine restorer that adds a film. Most of the walnut floors we are called to in Annetta are carrying that film and are otherwise fine. Hickory produces the opposite complaint. It is so hard that it barely marks, so owners tend to leave it alone for a decade, and then the film is a decade thick.

What We Do Differently on a Soft Floor

Less mechanical aggression and more chemistry and dwell, and the technician says so on the walk-through. A dent is compression in the wood and no cleaning lifts it. We do not sand, we do not refinish, and we do not re-stain, so a floor that has taken real damage in a soft species needs a different trade. The good news is that what most people are looking at is on the surface and it does come off.

Not sure whether your floor needs cleaning or refinishing? There are three tests you can run yourself in about a minute, and they will tell you which one you are dealing with before anyone quotes you.

Hardwood questions from Annetta homeowners

How do we tell what species we have?

Look at the grain and the color variation. Hickory has extreme variation between pale sapwood and dark heartwood in the same board. Walnut is uniformly chocolate brown with a straight, quiet grain. Red oak has the strong open grain lines everybody recognizes. If you still are not sure, the technician will tell you in a second.

Do the scratches in walnut come out?

Scratches through the finish only, and only where the wood underneath has not been cut. What tends to happen is that a maintenance coat fills the very fine surface scratching and makes the light behave consistently again, so the floor stops reading as scratched even where it technically still is.

Should we put felt on everything?

On a soft species, yes, and check them twice a year. A felt pad that has worn through to its adhesive backing is worse than no pad at all, and on walnut you find that out quickly.
