A lot of Bunker Hill oak was glued straight to a 1960s slab that was poured before anybody was thinking about vapor barriers.
Bunker Hill Village filled in through the sixties on generous lots, and the houses built then were slab-on-grade almost without exception. Frostwood, Whispering Oaks, and the streets that feed off Memorial and Gessner still hold a great many of the originals, sometimes remodeled twice over but standing on the same concrete.
That concrete matters more than anything else about the floor. A slab poured in 1963 in Harris County usually has no vapor retarder under it, or has a sheet of polyethylene that was torn during the pour and never patched. None of that is a cleaning problem and no amount of solution fixes it, so we find those areas on the walkthrough and work around them.
Why We Meter Everything
On a floor that is already taking moisture from below, adding more from above is the one genuinely destructive thing a cleaner can do. The mop-and-bucket approach puts free water in every seam, and on a glue-down assembly that water goes to the adhesive line. Our process puts down a measured amount of solution, works it, and takes it straight back up in one motion, so the board is damp for seconds and not minutes. Nothing stands anywhere.
The Slab Test Anybody Can Run
Tape a two-foot square of clear plastic sheeting tight to a bare patch of your slab, in a closet or the garage, and leave it for two days. Condensation on the underside means the slab is passing moisture. It costs nothing, it takes a roll of tape, and it explains most of the mysterious floor behavior in houses of this vintage better than any theory about the cleaning product somebody used.
The Part We Cannot Reach
Cleaning is a surface service. It takes off decades of accumulated product film and the soil bound up in it, and it leaves a water-based protective coat that takes the next few years of abrasion. It does not re-bond a lifted tile, it does not flatten a cupped board, and it does not touch damage that has gone into the wood. We are not a sanding or refinishing outfit, and on a floor that needs one, saying so early saves everybody a wasted afternoon.

Not the way we do it, because there is no standing water involved. It will not make the clicking better either. A loose square means the mastic has released underneath, and that is a flooring repair. We can clean around a small number of them without difficulty.
We remodeled and put engineered plank over the old slab in 2018. Different story?
Somewhat better, because a modern installation almost certainly included a moisture barrier or a glue that doubles as one. The wear layer is still thin, so the case for an annual maintenance coat is stronger on that floor than on the original oak.
How long before we can put the rugs back?
Walk on it inside the hour. Leave rugs rolled and slide nothing heavy for a day so the coat can finish hardening. That day is the only real inconvenience in the whole visit.
