What Each Kind Comes From
Surface marks come from shoes, from bags dragged across a floor, from a scooter wheel, from furniture with felt pads that are still doing their job. Cut marks come from grit under a shoe, from a dog running on a floor with sand tracked onto it, and above all from a chair or table leg where the pad has worn through to the staple. The staple is the single most destructive object in most family houses and it is invisible until you turn the chair over.
The Pantry Lane
In a house laid out the way these are, one lane between the back door and the pantry does two or three times the traffic of anything else. It goes dull first, then goes matte, then starts to open. Catching it while it is still dull is the difference between a cleaning and a floor problem. If you can see a defined path when you crouch at one end of the kitchen and look down the length of it, that is the stage to call somebody.
The Part That Does Not Improve
Deep gouges stay. Worn-through spots at doorways stay, and they will keep darkening because there is nothing protecting the oak. Black rings from a pet accident that soaked in are a reaction between urine and the tannin in the wood, and they live inside the board.
