What It Leaves Behind
The best case is a faint ring in the finish where the skirt sat, which comes off. The worse case is a dark gray circle where water got past the coating and reacted with the tannin in the oak, and that lives in the board. No cleaning and no maintenance coat touches it, and we are not sanding or refinishing anything, so on that one the honest answer is that it stays. On engineered plank the risk is different again, because a saturated seam can start the veneer lifting away from its core.
Three Things That Prevent All of It
A waterproof tray under the stand, wide enough to catch the skirt. A turkey baster or a funnel with a length of tubing for filling, so you are not aiming a jug into a bowl through branches. And lifting the whole assembly on a low platform so air can move underneath. None of it is expensive and all of it is easier than the alternative. Worth adding that an artificial tree is not automatically safe either. The stand still traps dust against the floor for five weeks, and the storage box it comes out of has been in a hot attic since January, which is why the first thing that happens when it goes up is a fine grit landing on the wood around it.
