We pulled up carpet and the floor looks gray and dead. Is it salvageable?
Very often yes, and this is one of the most common calls we get in East Memphis. Gray and flat after carpet removal is usually surface oxidation plus pad residue over an intact original finish. Cleaning takes both off. What would change the answer is a failed finish or pet urine that soaked through the pad into the oak, and both of those are identifiable on a walk-through.
There are dark patches where the carpet was. Will those clear?
Depends what made them. Grime and adhesive residue lift. Pet urine that reached the wood turns oak gray or black by reacting with the tannins, and that is in the grain, not on the surface. Cleaning will not move it. That is a sanding job at best and a board swap at worst, and it is worth knowing before you spend anything.
