The Compromise Most People Land On
Windows open on dry days, shut when the wind gets up and shut overnight in wet weather. Vacuum considerably more often during the open-window weeks, since pollen and fines are exactly the fraction that gets bonded into a film the moment somebody mops. And book the annual cleaning for late May, after the windows have closed and before the summer starts, and not in the middle of it.
Screens Are Doing Less Than You Think
A window screen stops insects and leaves. It stops essentially nothing in the size range that matters for a floor, which is fine mineral dust and pollen grains. Worse, an old screen holds years of accumulated grime in its mesh and the first strong breeze after a dry spell delivers a good deal of that straight into the room. Hosing the screens down at the start of the open-window season takes an afternoon and it is a genuine improvement.

Does pollen actually harm a floor?
Not chemically. It is a film-former, and the film holds grit, and the grit is what does damage. Pollen on its own is a nuisance. Pollen that gets mopped into the finish is the start of the problem.

Water off the sill. If it sits in the coating it comes off. If it has darkened the wood it is a stain inside the board and no cleaning reaches it, since bringing that back means work that a refinisher does and we do not.
