An ultrasonic diffuser works by breaking water and essential oil into a mist fine enough to stay airborne. That is the point of it. What happens next is that the mist circulates, cools, and settles, and the oil component does not evaporate the way the water does.

How to Confirm It

If the near cloth comes back with a faint yellowish or oily mark and the far one comes back mostly clean, there is a gradient, and a gradient centered on an object means that object is the source. You can often also feel the difference with a bare foot.
Why an Oil Film Is a Problem
It is sticky at a microscopic level, so it holds onto every particle of dust and grit that lands on it. That converts the floor into an abrasive surface that people then walk on. It also resists water-based cleaning, which is why mopping an oil-filmed floor produces streaks and a result that lasts about two days. It is the same mechanism as an open-plan kitchen with heavy cooking, arriving from a different direction.
Some Oils Do More Than Film
Citrus oils contain limonene, which is a solvent, and it is used commercially as a degreaser for exactly that reason. Repeated settling of citrus-heavy blends onto a urethane finish can soften it over time. It is not dramatic and it is real, and it is a reason to keep a diffuser off a hard floor surface and on a tray if it is running daily.
What the Clean Removes
The oil film and everything bound into it, right across the room, and the improvement furthest from the diffuser often surprises people more than the improvement close to it. Where a finish has been softened or etched, that stays. Replacing a finish is a sanding job and we are not sanders. The protective coat afterwards gives the next few years of settling something to land on that is not your finish.

Do we have to stop using it?
No. Move it off the floor if it is on the floor, put a tray under it, run it in shorter bursts, and expect the room to want cleaning on the shorter end of the interval. It is a maintenance consideration and not a prohibition.
Does the same apply to a humidifier?
